neighbor/DIRECT selection based on kernel routing

What do you think of optionally reading the kernel routing table and
going DIRECT or thru a particular neighbor based on this?

This is becoming useful here... we need to know hosts that are "close by"
but are more distant in terms of hops as measured by ICMP. Also, we could
make use of our router's knowledge... set up gated to peer BGP and/or OSPF
with our core router and make use of its table.

Duane, perhaps this is more feasible for your ASN-based system... instead
of peering an external route server?
