As a brief followup, I noticed other people have experiences this.
It doesn't occur when the squid is told not to daemonize, so a work
around is to have it not daemonize, and use a script like squid-1.1.x
does.
This also has the added benefit that I hopefully get backtraces from
it with some gdb trickery as Henrik suggested.
I've had a look at the watch_child code, but nothing obvious to me
makes me think its the culprit and more than a bug in libpthread.
