Here's my 2 cents about the version name:

supposed the new version is 2.0.0

the first number is for major changes,
the second one is for minor changes,
the third one is for bug fixing.

So if you have lots of things to change, increase the first number,
if just one or a few changes, increase the second one,
if there's some bugs and you fixed it, the new release just need to
increase the third number.

e.g. after release the version 2.0.0,

bug fix version should be 2.0.1
a few new feature or changes, the next release should be 2.1.0

and you can refer to the similar version as 2.x.x or 2.1.x

Forget where I got this idea, something like linux.
