If you need to learn about CVS, read this great reference manual.

To checkout the source tree from the CVS server:

     % cvs -z6 -d:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.squid-cache.org:/squid login

     When prompted for a password, enter 'anoncvs'.

     % cvs -z6 -d:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.squid-cache.org:/squid checkout squid
     % cvs logout
