My 20c : put your high-overhead consistency code in as a ./configure option
to allow us developers to debug/test.
I think if squid gets through Polygraph and some early-adopters on each
release the trade off should be acceptable.
As far as (2) goes.... I do not have enough practical experience with
'fragile' memory systems to comment..
