The snapshot I've taken has no modifications to the current development
snapshot. I took the snapshot to allow squid developers to have some
confidence in the automake - that automake regressions wouldn't randomly
occur before the next automake release.

It may well work with the latest automake preview - 1.4f I believe -
which is "stable". I haven't had time to try that specific version, I'll
try and make time this week or this weekend.

Not true. Changing $prefix will affect the squid.conf contents and
default paths for helpers leaving them inoperable on install after
packaging. There is an optional patch set we can apply to the current
Makefiles though.
