autoconf: 2.53 or above
automake: 1.5 or above (if 1.5, our hacked version is recommended but
not required)
libtool: not needed.

Automake 1.6 has a parallel install capability that allows it to coexist
with older releases. I'll look into autoconf's capability in that
regard.
