What 's happen if run squid -k reconfigure?

Dear Squid Developer,
I have some problem about squid when it's reconfigured.
If I have reconfigure cache_mem size in squid.conf ,
then I run ./squid -k reconfigure.

What 's happen?
1)My Hot Object are in cache_mem ,or not?

2)How I ensure that I have used memory(RAM) exact in cache_mem ?

3)cache_mem size is the memory(RAM) size for keep the Hot Object Only ?
