tidyup_deferred_reads and testing

hiya all,

I'm going into exam study mode until mid-november and so I won't
be doing any further work with my branch until after then.
I'd appreciate some testing so I know I haven't broken anything
with my changes. The majority of the large changes are out of the
way and I'm a couple of minor changes away from merging in
Stevens' epoll() code.

It'd be really appreciated.
