Alex can say better but AFAIK it was msghdr because the CMSG_*()
framework needs the fields it provides.

 From what I have seen, the CMSG framework generates raw packet
*headers*. So TypedMsgHdr is a packet protocol implementation. msghdr
provides the addressing and length fields, TypedMsgHdr provides the
packet type ID, and its children provide formatted extension headers.
  I have not yet figured out if the IPC packet is wrapped in UDP headers
or straight on top of IP. It is sent over essentially a raw socket..
