What format of ttl?

Hello!

 Can anybody explain me format of 'ttl-pattern'?

ttl_pattern ^http:// 5040 20% 43200
ttl_pattern ^ftp:// 10080 50% 43200
               ---- What is '^'?

ttl_pattern \.gif$ 10080 50% 43200
                    ---- What is '$'?

And how I can set *.jp*, for example (thinking about *.jpg, *.jpeg and
*.jp_)?

If object contain a last-modified timestamp - for which purposes set
TTL? In timestamp, as I understand, saved date and time of last
modification of object. Can Squid compare this date and time with saved
in cache and get object, if age of object is later, than age in cache's
object?

And so - can anybody give description of Squid's work algorithm? Or give
an address of this description?
