There is a /usr/sbin/trace in Digital Unix 4.0 but it has nothing to do
with tracing processes. I can send you the uuencoded source (or binary if
you trust me) of trace 1.25. It runs on our cache.
PS: it seems we have exactly the same problem with the same machine but I
didn't solve it yet :-(
