proxy_auth

Is there any documentation on defining proxy_auth?
Does squid facilitate user authentication to web-pages.

I have created a password file named /etc/squid_pwd via the CERN htpasswd.
Then I defined the file name in the squid.conf file. However I am receiving
the following error
"parseConfigFile: line 1003 unrecognized: 'proxy_auth /etc/squid_pwd'

I'm not to sure where I am meant to specify the directory I want
protected like the CERN access.conf file.

Any help would be most appreciated.
