Is my squid cache really working?

Hi,

I wonder if my squid 1.1.6 cache is really working. It looks to me
that all requests are missed. This is even so strong that backtracking in my
browser after a couple of minutes will refetch the item from the actual
source, even if I know it should be in the squid cache. The access log says
things like:

857423279.128 31635 194.183.97.85 TCP_REFRESH_MISS/200 2928 GET
http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid/ - DIRECT/squid.nlanr.net text/html
857423293.393 13018 194.183.97.85 TCP_REFRESH_MISS/200 10712 GET
http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid/Squidlogo2.gif - DIRECT/squid.nlanr.net
image/gif

The store.log says:

857422294.477 RELEASE 200 790317671 790302793 -2 text/html
74053/74053 GET 15/GET/http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid/FAQ.html
857422311.939 RELEASE 200 790317687 775972417 -2 image/gif

So, it looks like the objects are 'swapped out' almost as soon as they
arrive. Does that mean that these items are not cached?

Other objects (e.g. http://www.next.com/) seem to reside in the cache just fine.

and:

Is it something with the Squid FAQ that makes it uncacheable?

My system runs a lonely cache (not in any hierarchy yet). The system was
under a heavy load (compiling).

Yours,
