Have you tried to do the same with a FreeBSD box (www.freebsd.org)?
I'd be curious to hear if you have the same kind of problems with
FreeBSD.

A growing number of ISPs use FreeBSD as the platform for their services
for stability and responsiveness reasons (and for a better IP stack
implementation).
