This is not forking but squid dies (or is killed) and restarts...

This is not normal operation (as far as I know) and in fact doesn't happen
on my Solaris squid 1.1.10. Could it be you are running out of memory? I've
seen these kind of things happen at my system (I was running very low on
virual mem at the time...)
