ICP_OP_HIT_OBJ messages in cache.log

We seem to be getting rather a lot of

icpHandleIcpV2: ICP_OP_HIT_OBJ object too small

messages in our cache.log file. Ramping up the debugging reveals that
these are coming as a result of what appear to be "short" replies from
one of our neighbour caches.

Does anyone know precisely what these messages are a symptom of
(most importantly, is the problem local to the cache, or is to
a problem at the other end of the wire)
