   Hello all,

I have installed squid 1.1.18 on RedHat Linux 5.0. It dosn't want to
start properly - it says I cannot run it as root unless I define
cache_effective_user. Which is odd, because I have set
cache_effective_user to user 'squid' which I newly created. It says
following:

zora:/etc/rc.d/init.d# ./squid start
Starting squid:
zora:/etc/rc.d/init.d# squid 97/12/12 17:02:27| Squid is not safe to run
as root! If you must
97/12/12 17:02:27| start Squid as root, then you must configure
97/12/12 17:02:27| it to run as a non-priveledged user with the
97/12/12 17:02:27| 'cache_effective_user' option in the config file.
FATAL: Don't run Squid as root, set 'cache_effective_user'!
Squid Cache (Version 1.1.18): Terminated abnormally.

I repeat, I _DO_ have set cache_effective_user properly in
/etc/squid/squid.conf. I wonder what's up. I tried 'nobody' account as
well to no avail.

   Bye Borek
