Just for the record (or the archives if there are some).
I solved the problem. The reason was a additional
IP address for the Web-server to be queuried in
/etc/hosts.conf of the squid machine. This entry
served some testing purposes and was forgotten.

Squid has directed it's queueries to both server
addresses. Unfortunately the 2nd had a running webserver
too...

No other program seemed to use a second entry in the
hosts file in round-robin fashin if the first address
is up and responding like squid does. Thus the error was
never detected before!
