Proxy Auth and not authenticating usernames which are 1 letter long

Squid 1.1.20 with the acl proxy auth 1.1.20 patch applied is refusing to
authenticate any users with uesrnames with only one character in them. Has
anybody experienced this problem and solved it, before I dive into the source?
