I/O error from squid

I'm seeing a large number of lines in the squid cache.log file that look
like the following:

1998/05/21 00:04:55| storeSwapOutStart: Unable to open swapfile:
/usr/local/squid/cache/00/5A/0005F5A0
1998/05/21 00:06:34| file_open: error opening file
/usr/local/squid/cache/00/5A/0005F5A0: (5) I/O error

I also notice that when I try to do an "ls -l" of the .../5A directory
I see long pauses before the listing appears.

Is this likely a symptom of running out of file descriptors or something
else?
