firewall but pinging the destination host?

Hello,

running 1.1.21 I got a very poor performance
since it seems as if the squid tries to
ping the destination first and then uses
its parent. This might be normal behaviour for a
fully connected host, but if there's an firewall
the pings time out and squid needs a long time to
uses it's parent. (parent is pingable).

Any hints?
