Squid won't release rc.local after it starts

I have just built squid 2.0 and all runs well, except I cannot get squid to
run correctly on startup.

I have tried using the lines provided in the faq but when squid is run from
rc.local or init.d it goes into daemon mode but fails to let the rest of the
boot process complete.

Squid works fine though.

Can anyone help me fix this problem as the only way around it at the moment
is to telnet in and run it once boot up is complete.

I have tried using -N but that doesn't seem to work either.
