A interesting excerpt from recommendations in RFC 1738:

   In some cases, extra whitespace (spaces, linebreaks, tabs, etc.) may
   need to be added to break long URLs across lines. The whitespace
   should be ignored when extracting the URL.

It should be noted that this does not apply to uses of URLs in HTML
code, unless the HTML code is processed as text and not HTML (i.e. HTML
code viewed on screen or printed on paper).
