Linux 2.2 and filedescriptors

In a seperate email Alan said the poll/select constraint will be fixed
before 2.2 is out (2.2 should be out for Xmas).

There is still a constraint in poll/select that needs fixing, so you can
have lots of files now but only poll 256 at once. Thats the next one to
be targetted.
