Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

My employer is a very happy user of Squid 1.1.20 on a modest system (FreeBSD
2.2.8-RELEASE, 128 MB, P5 class processor).

The new version, 2.1PATCH2, performs very badly in comparison with 1.1.20 on
this system. Pages appear to half load and then there is a wait for up to a
minute until the page is "done".
From a browser point of view both no cache and squid 1.1.20 get pages much
faster than 2.1.

Some details are

. no tweaking of the configure script (apart friom --perfix)
. same results with cache_mem 20 MB as 60 MB
. no parent cache (no ICP)
. no delay Pool use
. same results with or without NCSA auth (Web client is Apache).
. AFAIK (configure.status) shows no thread usage

Also, the network utilisation when 2.1PATCH2 is running is much less than with
1.1.20. It seems like 2.1 is simply not asking for pages as fast as 1.1.20.

Your comments will be gratefully received.

Thank you,

Yours sincerely

S Hopcroft
