Not exactly: On some systems you can increase the number of
filedescriptors at runtime. Eg. on NetBSD (and OpenBSD?) with
"sysctl -w kern.maxfiles=<number>".

But you will have to tell your squid that there are now more available,
see "max_open_disk_fds" in squid.conf (version 2.1(?!) or higher)
(leave some spare for the system, eg <number>-200), if you don't want to
reconfigure+compile squid.
