Hi

Generally:

1) Squid only operates on HTTP, gopher, https and ftp. It does
not include generic 'plugs', mail proxies and so forth.

2) Squid is not designed to segregate internal and external
networks. It generally operates on outgoing connections only:
        not normally on incoming connections.

3) Firewalls normally let you set rulesets for things like
        ICMP, UDP and so forth.

You can combine operating system features (such as packet
filtering), the firewall toolkit (fwtk) and Squid
to create a pretty decent firewall.

4) Firewall plugs are generally written pretty strictly. They
are kept small and simple to make them "obviously correct",
so that they avoid buffer overflows and the like.

Squid is neither small nor simple.
