Known meltdown conditions?

All--

I just experienced a meltdown with Squid2-Stable3 running in a 24M ram disk
on a 486 with 36M ram using LRP 2.9.4. The server had been running for
several days, and the ramdisk was in the 80% full range. I was doing some
research on the net which entailed alot of PDF file downloads, each of
which was around 2-300K. My max object size is set to 1M. Anyway, all of
a sudden, the CPU load (as repoorted by lcdproc) went from the usual .2 or
so to about 5.6. I tried to log in, but things got so slow that I couldn't
get a 'ps' to see what was going on. I let it go for about 5 mins, at which
time the box rebooted. Any ideas?
