Then first thing your should do is to get a supported Squid version. The
current one is 2.2.STABLE3 with a couple of official patches posted on
the NLANR site. See http://squid.nlanr.net/

Proxy authentication is not very stable in base squid-1.X version, and
very inflexible when compared to Squid-2.X.
