        1) Disable the HTML misfeature in your mail program;

        2) Install an NNTP proxy - squid does not proxy NNTP - or add
           a bypass rule to your firewall for port 119. I don't know
           of any pure proxies, although I believe there are some caching
           servers;

        3) Move to a more appropriate mailing list.
