filemap bits

I am running Squid 2.2STABLE4. I am finding that my filemap bits
in use is climbing to maximum (40960) very quickly and at that
point squid bombs. I have tried changing both
store_avg_object_size and store_objects_per_bucket but the max
filemap bits in use (as reported by cachemgr doesn't change.

Have I missed something?
