Performance Increase by changing Directory Structure

Hi,

I have spoken to a couple of people who say
they have experimented with squid to get the
best perfomance out of squid.

What they say they have done, which increases
performance considerably, is to increase the number
of top level cache dirs and reduce the depth.

Has anyone got a definative answer to this ? and
if so what would be a reasonable set of dirs to use ?

Thanks in advance.

Darrell...
