running out of filedescriptors?

We are running Squid 2.2-STABLE5 on a FreeBSD 2.2.8 machine. Squid thinks
it has 1024 filedescriptors available although it actually has many more (>
3000).

Anyway, during periods of heavy use with about 250 browsers all using the
proxy we see repeated messages:

WARNING! Your cache is running out of filedescriptors

On rare occasions our cache actually runs out of filedescriptors and exits.

Is this "expected" behavior? Should we double or triple the number of
filedescriptors available? Are we reaching some limit regarding number of
clients for a single Squid cache.
