People report different things for unlink vs truncate. In my
tests, truncate proved to give a little higher throughput.

See http://www.squid-cache.org/Benchmarking/std1/2.2.stable3-unlink/

Other people report that truncate is the same, or worse. It probably
depends on your particular operating system and how the filesystem
works.
