The problems in the above are the definition of "most" and "reasonable."
I'm using Squid on differing platforms, which are going to define
"reasonable" differently. I'd wager that many O/S's don't offer a
lot in the way of knob-twiddling when it comes to their internal
file-caching behaviour and algorithms. If they do, it's likely pretty
deeply buried. I'd prefer not to have to trust the O/S, nor is it likely
that the O/S is going to be doing exactly what I want w/r/t file-caching.
