possible problem with half_closed_clients options & file descriptors

hi all,

the env:

Squid Object Cache: Version 2.2.STABLE5-hno.19991127
SunOS 5.7 Generic_106541-08 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-1
squid is running under socks5-v1.0r10 to enable it to talk
to the outside world via a socks5 server.

the problem:

with the default "half_closed_clients on" option set in squid.conf
squid winds up running out of file descriptors, max of 1024.
cachemgr output shows increasing numbers of file descriptors being
used by half-closed connections like so:

 581 Socket 1267 970* 21217* 192.168.1.10.4804 half-closed
 582 Socket 1256 4550* 2319* 192.168.3.39.1083 half-closed
 583 Socket 1273 2594* 5575* 192.168.3.39.1137 half-closed
 584 Socket 1267 1422* 22011* 192.168.1.10.4810 half-closed

the file descriptors never seem to be released, once they're in this state.

the workaround is to turn off the half_closed_clients option in the
conf file which doesn't appear to negatively impact the operation of
squid at all.

has anyone else noticed the same hassle with or without socks5?

cheers,
pauline
