I always have my swap.index files on a separate partition to protect it
from file system full errors. Squid happily recovers if it fails to
store content in the cache directories, but aborts with a fatal error if
it fails to write to swap.index.

See cache_swap_log in squid.conf.

Needless to say that I do not agree with the last sentence of the tag
description.
