performance limit?

Hi,

We are runing Squid latest version (2.3 stable 1) on a Digital UNIX 1GB memory
and 2 UFS 3 GB cache dir. We notice at peak time the number of request can reach

client_http.requests = 50/sec

and squid becomes terribly slow. At other time it is o.k.
Did we reach the limit of performance ? Anybody else have the same problem?
