Well, according to 2 replies I got, I've set cache_mem to 20 instead
of 40. I think this is the minimum because StoreEntries are almost
400.000 and I read squid needs at least 100 bytes per object.

I have to say that space for storing data is 4 Gb, not 500 Mb (which
is the system swapping zone), and that squid *is* a dedicated box,
with a secondary DNS.

I can't even hear of turning off logging, because I need some statistics
weekly about the cache utilization.

Anyway, squid is still swapping (20% today, Storage LRU Expiration Age is
 2.08 days, page fault ratio is 0.034). What can I do ?

Without any other suggestion, I think I will restart squid everyday,
and see...
