Filemap bits

Hello,

I have been running with a 16GB disk as a cache dir, and decided to add a
18GB disk, partitioned in 2 as additional cache space. The following is
my observation:

Original Disk:
=============
Maximum Size: 14592000 KB
Filemap bits in use: 1330997 of 16777216 (8%)
Filesystem Space in use: 15719476/16721844 KB (94%)
Filesystem Inodes in use: 1335136/2125760 (63%)

New disk, partition 1
=====================
Maximum Size: 8192000 KB
Filemap bits in use: 20101 of 32768 (61%)
Filesystem Space in use: 276896/8823404 KB (3%)
Filesystem Inodes in use: 24224/1121664 (2%)

New disk, partition 2
=====================
Maximum Size: 8192000 KB
Filemap bits in use: 20139 of 32768 (61%)
Filesystem Space in use: 247936/8831468 KB (3%)
Filesystem Inodes in use: 24262/1121664 (2%)

I am running Linux 2.2.x. I am trying to determine why the ratio of
filemap bits:disk space is so different, and why my used filemaps %tage is
so high. The squid is 2.3STABLE2. I read in the FAQ that for 2.3
(question 11.27) filemap bit usage can get high, however why such a
difference in the filemap sizes vs disk sizes?

Thanks in advance,

Chris Conn
