POP3 & SMTP problems

I've installed Squid 2.3 stable1 on Linux Slackware 7.0

I use this system to cache webpages but also to firewall and hand out dhcp
addresses. So it has two ethernet cards. The dhcp adresses are in another
range that those of the outside world. So internaly the systems cannot
connect directly to the internet i.e. they cannot ping an outside IP address
and therefore cannot connect directly to the POP3 servers outside. They have
to go through the proxy but not one mail client seems to support the proxy
setting.

How can I solve this ?
