Reverse Proxy w/Password Protection

OK,

So I've determined after two days of fighting with Squid that you can't
password protect a reverse proxy, don't know why, but you can't.

Has anyone on the list had a need to do this and found a way around it? If
so, I'd be a very happy camper if you would share with me how you did it.
