WCCP is one particular way that you can implement transparent caching.

in terms of what it means for squid, the differences are currently
neglegable; squid currently has WCCPv1 which won't provide many of the
benefits that WCCPv2 can provide over alternate ways of transparent caching.

when WCCPv2 support for squid is released, there will be differences.
