fastget and getright are using ICMP pings no http ping to establish the
closest server. This approach will not work if your firewall doesn't allow
ICMP thru (or gateway it as socks5 can). Squid is not a generic proxy, it is
a HTTP proxy and thus doesn't support handling icmp requests. Nor should it.
Using squid in conjunction with a socks server makes sense however - allow
your ping requests via socks, and your http requests via squid.

Alternatively contact the software vendors and request that they support
typical corporate environments - that is , limited , specific protocols
only, access to the outside world.
