[SQU] Can't initialize on RH7

I can't get squid to initialize itself.

I have a new server running RH7. I installed Squid 2.3-STABLE4-1 from
the rpm's on the installation CD. Because this is a test server, I am
using pretty much a default configuration, so I didn't have to change
much in the config file. I have defined the "cache_dir ufs
/var/spool/squid 100 16 256" as shown in the squid.conf example and as
discussed in the FAQ.

But, when I do '/usr/sbin/squid -z' and I get FATAL: Unknown cache_dir
type '/var/spool/squid'. This happens if I try it as root or su'd to
"squid". I get the same thing no matter what I try to do. I can't start,
stop, reconfigure, or anything.

What am I missing here?

Thanks for any assistance.
