can't confirm it so far, but it appears that the 'hang' happens about the
same time that mrtg checking runs:

ps ax | grep squid
37651 ?? Ss 0:00.00 /bin/sh -c /usr/local/bin/mrtg /usr/local/etc/mrtg/mrtg-squid-snmp.cfg
37653 ?? S 0:00.48 /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/bin/mrtg /usr/local/etc/mrtg/mrtg-squid-snmp.cfg
37263 p0 I+ 0:03.39 tail -f /usr/local/squid/logs/access.log
37279 p1 I 0:00.00 /bin/sh /usr/local/squid/bin/RunCache
37283 p1 R 24:26.96 squid -NsY
37658 p1 DL+ 0:00.00 grep squid
