[SQU] passwd/shadow authentication, non-PAM

Hi guys, howzit going ? ;-)

Something simple:

I need to get Squid doing authentication against /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow,
does anyone have any ideas on how to do this ?

You see the reason is that we are running Slackware Linux, which does not
come with PAM, so I really need to get the authentication working just
against passwd & shadow.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
