Can both of you tell me why squid performs badly on slow links.

9GB UW SCSI cache drive
6.4GB IDE drive05
Redhat 7.0 Kernel 2.2.16
Squid 2.4 release for 2001/04/
Our link is 90% over utilised.
Web pages loads very slowly or sometimes take very long to load with squid.
