i have the same kind of trouble with 2.4.stable1.
perhaps you can try and set cache_dir and cache_mem size values back to
their defaults.

When I perform the following command ps aux I have
USER PID %CPU %MEM SZ RSS TTY STAT STIME TIME COMMAND
root 14228 94.8 9.0 198568 197116 - A 09:09:34 434:17 (squid)
root 1290 1.5 0.0 64 8768 - A 04:04:36 11:31 kproc
but SIZE and RSS increased continuously it is normal ?
